Your Cognac: Roffignac VSOP Borderies

29 February 2012 5 Comments

With the new feature on Cognac Fans: Submit Your Cognac Bottle, you are able to submit your Cognac bottle, if you would like to know some more information,  the value or it’s age…

Today we received the Roffignac VSOP in our inbox, the Roffignac VSOP with 100% Borderies. One of our favourite Cru’s of Cognac!

Name of bottle: Comte Ferdinand de Roffignac VSOP

Written on labels: 40% vol, Cognac Grand fine Borderie, Mis en bouteille au chateau chesnel, 16370 cherves de cognac – richemont (charente). Lead seal to the top with letter R on both sides.

Story: I won a very good Napolean Brandy at a major trade golf tournament1983/4 and was given a dummy pack by mistake.
When the error was discovered some months later, I received the original prize and this bottle by way of apology. This was described at the time in the accommpanying letter as one of the vinyards finest. I have had it ever since, not knowing when to open it, if at all. I would like to know if it has any value or just to drink it with friends.

Information: However the Cognac is from the more exclusive area’s (Borderies) it stays a VSOP-quality. According Cognac Wiki the new version of this Cognac is aged 8 years, which is by far not enough for an valuable Cognac. We advise to drink it with friends, it will be worth about $40,-. Enjoy it!

General information about Roffignac:

CHÂTEAU CHESNEL was built at the beginning of the 17th century near the city of COGNAC. The descendants of CHESNEL acquired it by marriage and nowadays it belongs to the family of the counts de ROFFIGNAC.

Under the reign of François I the domain of La Roche, situated north of the city of COGNAC, is being acquired by Jacques CHESNEL, the governor of the city of COGNAC at that time

Thanks to its location near the river the Charente and to its fleet the city of COGNAC is in the XVIth century mainly being associated with the trade of wine and salt.

In the XVIth century (in 1598) “Chevalier de la Croix Marron” recommends the double distillation and because of the late collection of the products and by accident it is being discovered that the brandy becomes better when aged in oak casks.
