Value rises for Cognac shipments – 2012/2013

martell-truckThe Cognac region has reported its second largest set of annual shipment figures, despite a slight dip on last year’s record volumes.

Total shipments of Cognac in the 12 months to the end of July came in at 166m bottles, according to figures from the Bureau National Interprofessionnel Cognac (BNIC). The performance in volume terms was 1.1% down on the corresponding period a year ago, when the region set an all-time record for shipments.

  • The value of shipments increased for the fourth consecutive year, rising by 7.3% year-on-year to EUR2.4bn (US$3.20bn).
  • Shipments to the NAFTA zone were up by 9.7% in value terms led by the US (+8.7%), while the Far East remained the leading destination by volume and posted revenue growth of 8.9%.
  • VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) Cognac was up 14.9% in value.

Breakdown of sold bottles:

  • VS Quality – 72.5 million bottles
  • VSOP Quality – 70.6 million bottles
  • XO and above – 23.5 million bottles
