Nowadays, we think of cognac primarily as something to sip by the fireside after a nice dinner.
Yet back in the nineteenth century, when the art of cocktail as we know it first came together, one thing the both the barkeepers who created it and their eager customers would have all agreed on was that nothing made for a better mixed drink than good cognac.

At the Vinexpo, Raymond Ragnaud presented a new Cognac product, which is the best of two worlds. They used Grande Champagne (first cru, and mostly described as the best) and a very old, rare grape called Folle Blache. This grape was the original grape the Cognac-industry used in the past, but after the Phylloxera around 1880, the are using mostly Ugni Blanc. A Phyloxera resistant grape.

I think I have a new favorite for the affordable Cognac, thats the Pierre Ferrand Ambre. This is a 100% Grande Champagne Cognac and aged on average 10 years. Unbelievable for the lowest in the range of a brand like Pierre Ferrand.
The price? Here at the wholesale this Cognac costs about 24 euros including VAT. At other off-licenses, this Cognac is almost always below 30 euros. Very well affordable!

The Frapin VS is a perfect VS cognac, probably to good for the VS-quality! It’s refined, balanced, full flavored and wonderfully aromatic. This cognac has one problem: the price! 35 euros is a lot of money for a VS cognac, buying a nice Menard VSOP Grande Champagne cognac, and stick a tenner in the pocket for a good cigar looks to be a better deal.
