L’Or de Jean Martell and Eric Gizard

L'OR de Jean MartellFrench interior architect and designer Eric Gizard creates objects and living spaces where harmony and elegance reign. Martell has called upon his creativity to create a bottle for the most beautiful gem in its collection, L’OR de Jean Martell, an exceptional assembly of over 400 eaux-de-vie, the quintessence of cognac. This is an encounter with a man who values time.

I love how shape tells a story. For L’OR de Jean Martell, I worked by drawing inspiration from cabinets of curiosities where collectors would store precious, almost magical objects in Renaissance Europe. I was also inspired by silver cloches from great restaurants that excite curiosity and showcase the revelation of an exceptional dish.

Contents and container
A container is a second skin: it must simultaneously protect and reveal. For L’OR de Jean Martell, I designed a preformed interior in which the bottle sits perfectly. Its base contains a hidden book that emerges with a single push. A mirror placed behind the bottle reflects and enhances the colour of this exceptionally intense cognac. I love this slow, gradual discovery of a well-hidden secret.

Material is essential. I love the contrasts between rough and smooth, matt and shiny surfaces. The fine-grain leather that feels smooth against your skin, the outline that the stitching creates, the metallic lustre of a lid which sits perfectly enshrined within its container…

When it comes to modern design, everything is newly made, yet nothing is really “new”. We are witnessing technical developments, but we are far from the post-war revolution that resulted in the production of objects at industrial rate. People yearn for what is vintage. It is as if the mobility and acceleration of our daily lives is calling us to live at a slower pace, within the privacy of our homes.

For me, luxury is the opposite of that which glitters. My luxury is in the details, in space, savoir-faire, the ritual gesture and slowness. I call this the “luxury of the invisible”. These are things that are unseen, which you feel deep within.

L’OR de Jean Martell
It is an assembly of unique eaux-de-vie. Its name describes its precious character. In designing the bottle that was entrusted to me, I wanted to illuminate this inner gold to reveal all of its brilliance. A shimmering amber light that reflects the mysterious heart of cognac.
