£50,000 vintage 1788 Cognac Shattered

24 July 2012 3 Comments

A clumsy customer at London’s Playboy Club managed to destroy a $77,615 (£50,000) bottle of  a very expensive historic Cognac, which dated back to 1788.

The Cognac, a Café Anglais Clos de Griffier Vieux from 1788, was destroyed after a businessman, who had ordered two glasses of the brandy at £5,050 a measure, asked to look at the bottle.

As the customer stood up, he sent the bottle flying across the club, before it smashed on the floor.

The Cognac was due to feature in the world’s most expensive cocktail, which would have been mixed this week by Salvatore Calabrese in front of judges from Guinness World Records.

Unfortunately for all, the bottle of Clos de Griffier Vieux wasn’t insured because it had already been open. But, it seems the clumsy customer, a club regular, has been forgiven. “Accidents happen,” Calabrese told The Evening Standard.

The bottle had previously been sold for $37,000 at a Paris auction back in 2009…

    (in English)

Almost completely disrespectful and unworthy raped.

What a fun yet shocking news!

    The bad news:
A proof that this kind of very special drinks sometimes (often?) end up with the wrong people, not with the real fans who something like that cherish with passion and especially with respectful caution.
The ‘gentleman’ in question might have more eyes and “passion” for the lady in the service and/or her that accompanied him.

    The good news:
Such a special ancient cognac is better of by ending carelessness by spilling on the floor of a Playboyclub (when I was there, I think I would have tried to lick the remains of the floor), then completely disrespectful and also unworthy raped (abused) in a cocktail!
